Peer Mentoring Program
E2I Peer Mentoring Program
E2I introduced a peer mentoring program (PMP) to provide support and advice to students admitted under the School-based Admission (SBA) Scheme. Our Center aspires to build a forward-looking and dynamic model of innovative learning experiences for engineering students that are student-centered and outcome-based. Under the umbrella of PMP, holistic student development workshops and on-going assessment support through research and evaluation studies will go hand in hand to ascertain how students' learning experiences influence their development of generic attributes and enhancement of social adjustment skills.
Peer mentors are upper-year engineering students who volunteer their time to help the SENG first-year students. Both mentors and mentees have said the skills and opportunities gained from participation in the PMP have led to a transformative experience.
What Do Mentors Do?
- Dive into Center and cross-department trainings that focus on coaching, effective communication, team building, and mental health first aid workshops.
- Put your skills into action by actively supporting and mentoring first-year mentees, helping them develop effective academic study plans, and sharing guidance based on your own experiences.
- Play a vital role in the School Welcoming and Orientation activities, lending a hand during Registration Day, Advising Week, Info Day, Community Meetings, and other related events.
- Collaborate with fellow mentors to create unforgettable House events that captivate and inspire mentees, with the full support and resources of the Center.
- And much more!
What Do Mentors Get?
Along the way, mentors also form strong friendships among themselves as a community, and benefit from valuable networking opportunities with faculty, staff, and alumni of the University. In addition to an official recognition of their service, mentors are also eligible for awards for outstanding service and benefits as Student Helpers of the School. Applications and interviews for the 2026-27 Peer Mentoring Program has concluded. If you are interested in joining the program, please stay tuned for the application announcement next Spring!

Continuing my journey as a peer mentor since high school, I’ve found the HKUST community incredibly nice and active. This program taught me to build a community with strong linkage, moving beyond "hi-bye" interactions to foster deeper connections and support student well-being. By sharing experiences and addressing academic stress together, we create a truly supportive environment. If you want to meet people from diverse backgrounds and grow together, definitely check out the Peer Mentoring Program!
Ritika Best Peer Mentor 2024-2025
Receiving the Best Peer Mentor Award was one of the most meaningful milestones in my university journey. I first joined the programme as a freshman, hoping to make new friends, meet people, and support other students who might be struggling to adjust to university life. My first semester at UST was quite daunting, but thanks to my own peer mentor and others in the programme, I gradually grew more comfortable with the new environment and all the unfamiliar terminology that came with it. That experience inspired me to become someone who could offer the same guidance and reassurance to first-year students. Earning the Best Peer Mentor Award later on felt deeply validating—it showed that I had genuinely helped others find their footing in university. The programme became more than just a mentorship experience; it opened doors to a variety of extracurricular activities that helped me strengthen my leadership and community-building skills that will aid me throughout my life. Beyond the award itself, I’m especially grateful for the friendships and connections I formed through the programme, many of which have become some of the most meaningful relationships in my university life.
Malav Best Peer Mentor 2023-2024
Being awarded the Best Peer Mentor at HKUST marked a pivotal moment in my personal and professional development. As an international student, I faced many difficulties adjusting to university life. It was challenging to make friendships, connect with others, and feel a sense of community. However, the peer mentoring program helped ease my experience, allowing me to meet many people who shared similar backgrounds or goals. This support made my first year at university much easier. Inspired by my own experience, I joined the program to help others. I felt a deep sense of satisfaction when I could guide new students who were unsure of what to do; it felt as if I was helping shape someone’s future.
Being part of the program also had numerous other benefits. The PMP team recommended me for additional university programs, and I participated in three of them, which greatly enhanced my leadership, communication, and networking skills. These opportunities provided a platform for me to showcase my potential and improve myself. As I head into my final year, I remain involved in the Peer Mentoring Program, and I can confidently say that joining this program was one of the best decisions of my university life.
