Tips for being a great mentor

  • Be available for your mentee-in person, by phone, e-mail, and/or social media.
  • Don’t wait for your mentee to approach you for advice. Be proactive and offer support for academic or personal issues.
  • Work on your abilities to actively listen, understand, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Be approachable, open-minded, and empathetic
  • Look for assistance when needed— E2I and other faculty advisors are there to support your mentoring efforts.
  • Be responsible for fulfilling your commitments to your mentees and the PMP.
  • Enjoy the experience and have fun!

Tips for being a great mentee

  • Be honest with your peer mentor.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions — even if you think they might be silly.
  • Explain to your mentor what you are looking to gain
  • Keep appointments and be punctual.
  • Successes both great and small worth celebrating. Share your successes—personal or academic—with your peer mentor.
  • Be an active member of your clan and build relationships with your peers, mentors, advisors.
  • Enjoy the experience and have fun!
